In the lead up to the display, 21cc Fireworks’s previous finale displays have been featured on the new Tennant’s special edition cans and cases. The new firework wrapped cases were released this week into the supermarkets and will be circulated globally ahead of this summers festival.

Company Director Geoff Crow said “We have built up a great relationship with the team at T over the last number of years. It is a challenging event given the tight parameters that we need to work within and the detailed co-ordination with other services and broadcasters, but every year we produce something safe, new and exciting. We have put an inordinate amount of time into the planning of this years event, which will be the biggest show yet. If the conditions are right, we will be presenting something ‘extra special’ at the end of this years T in the Park that will be unique to this event.”

Site Manager George King said “It’s funny walking into the local supermarket and seeing someone pick up a pack of Tennants, mention the fireworks to their friends, knowing that these are our fireworks!”

One of the key criteria is to ensuring there is consistency of product. Are the bursts from a multiple shot unit achieving consistent height? Are the colours and the shape of the burst well defined? Is the timing between bursts regular? These are some of the different things that the 21cc Fireworks team look for in our professional fireworks.

Before we went to China, the 21cc Fireworks display team had put together a number of different designs for new effects. The prototypes of some of these new designs were tested whilst we were there. Some of the new effects were spectacular.

The Chinese are wonderful people. They are very hospitable people – and like the 21cc Fireworks team, they love their food! Meal times in China are a big deal and a time when everyone comes together to eat and to enjoy company. You never really know what you might be eating at times, but that is part of the attraction. With us being in the Hunan Province, all of the food is spicy – even breakfast can be spicy!

We cannot wait to show our range of new effects and designs to our clients here in the UK. The first delivery of stock from China will be arriving here at the 21cc Fireworks base in Edinburgh some time in the middle of May.

In the lead up to Guy Fawkes this year, 21cc Fireworks invested heavily in infrastructure with the expansion of the main preparation yard and the building of a 3rd facility. The investment also included new vans, equipment and in the training of staff. 21cc Fireworks as an organisation are trained to deliver the British Pyrotechnics Association (BPA) training course, meaning that all of the 21cc Fireworks shows are delivered using trained and experienced crew.

On the night, 21cc Fireworks scooped the overall Industry Award. The awards took place alongside more than six hundred of its Scottish wedding industry peers at the Hilton Glasgow.

VOWS stands for Voted Outstanding Wedding Supplier of the year and is a celebration of businesses in the Scottish wedding industry which have been nominated for the awards by happy newlyweds for exceptional levels of service. Now in its eighth year, the VOWS Awards 2012 attracted more than 13,000 nominations and 100 Scottish wedding companies made the shortlist.

Speaking at the event on Monday night, Geoff of 21cc Fireworks was overjoyed with the win. This is the second time 21cc Fireworks has won a VOWS award but the first time they have won the ultimate accolade of the Industry Award.

Geoff said: “I feel surprised and blown away! We’ve worked so very hard for so many years. To win this Industry Award is incredible. I am so humbled. Thank you to our clients.”

Monday night’s 80s-themed awards ceremony was hosted by TV personality Keith Chegwin and featured 20 award categories. Stewart Roxburgh at Scottish Enterprise was part of the five-strong judging panel, which also included representatives from VisitScotland and Bridal Buyer magazine. He was impressed by the high standards of entries this year. He said: “In these times when personal referral is everything, it is absolutely essential that the industry responds with creativity and professionalism that not only reflects on our individual brands but on the entire industry in Scotland.”

The incident was reported by the BBC and became national news after a video of the moment the fireworks cross ignited was shown on YouTube.

The event has been run successfully by the community for over 10 years and attracts a lot of people each year.

Following the event, our company director Geoff Crow was invited by the BBC to review the footage and advise the general public on things to consider when organising their own shows.

He said “One of the most important issues is a knowledge of the product that they are using and the ways in which is can fail. Once you know this, the rest of the event planning can come together, such as public viewing locations, safety distances and methods of firing the material. There is a lot to be said for using trained and experienced personnel, who have a knowledge of the product and are capable of putting together a competent risk assessment.”

Geoff also added “The reason there were so few injuries with such a big explosion is because this event was well planned. These events are really important for local communities. They bring people together, sowing into the social fabric of society, giving people a sense of togetherness.”

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons

21cc Fireworks were appointed as an official supplier of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons developing and manufacturing beacons, which were distributed around the UK and abroad as part of the royal celebrations. Some notable torches included Edinburgh Castle and the Aberdare National Park in Kenya where the Queen was first informed of her fathers’ death, meaning she would become the next Monarch.

The Olympic Torch Relay

May and June saw the Olympic Torch touring the country, with 21cc Fireworks running ahead of it delivering a range of pyrotechnics for the Olympic Torch as it passed the waiting crowds, including firefalls, red white and blue colour splashes and posed set pieces with dignitaries.

VIP Celebrations & Weddings

At the same time, there have been a few special private parties around the country and some VIP wedding fireworks displays that we have had the privilege to present our shows at. These shows included enormous fountain set pieces with the Red Hot Chillie Pipers and spectacular fireworks displays to music to entertain the guests.

Festival Finales and Concerts

As the country has partied to the tunes of their favorite bands, the 21cc Fireworks team has been busy beavering away behind the scenes working on the stages preparing a range of special effects and pyrotechnics for the bands, such as Scouting for Girls, Pixie Lott and Madonna’s MDNA World Tour as well as building spectacular professional firework finales for festivals large and small, including one the UK’s biggest, T In The Park.

Over the last 12 months, company Director, Geoff Crow has been championing the ‘Green Revolution’ within the 21cc Fireworks team. Our event delivery has never been so sustainably focused. From day-to-day office work, site work, show design, debris management and transport.

Nibakure Children’s Village

Over the last few months, we have become a major sponsor of the Nibakure Children’s Village project in Rwanda, where we have provided financial funding and resources to support the building of schools, homes and education facilities for the child-led families. To date we have managed to send $5,400 for the project. Some of the 21cc Fireworks team have also visited the project in Rwanda to support the work.

The 21cc Fireworks team were at the heart of the event as an official supplier of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons. There were 4224 officially registered Beacon Lighting events in the UK and 26 globally in celebration of the Queen’s reign. Many of the beacons were shown being lit live on the BBC and STV around the country as part of the national TV coverage of the event.

Some notable locations where the 21cc Fireworks Diamond Jubilee Beacons were lit included Edinburgh Castle, lit by Major General Nick Eeles live on the BBC and Sky, Palace Demense and mountain tops such as Ben Nevis (as part of the 4 tallest peaks in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). They were also sent abroad including one very special beacon, which was lit by John Bradshaw of the British High Commission outside the hotel in the Aberdare National Park in Nyeri, central Kenya. This is the hotel where the young Princess Elizabeth was staying when she was told in 1952 of her father George VI’s death – which meant she would become the monarch.

As well as the provision of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons, 21cc Fireworks were also putting on a range of spectacular firework shows around the country, including some to the traditional ‘Pomp and Circumstance’ classical music scripts, such as the ‘Crown Imperial’.

The beacon lighting event has been submitted to the Guinness book of records for the longest chain of beacons ever lit.

As a certified provider to the Queens Diamond Jubilee Beacon and to celebrate the occasion, 21cc Fireworks have developed a Jubilee Gas Beacon (or church tower beacon) that has been designed especially for the national event on the 4th June 2012.

The torches are £360 plus VAT each. This includes:

1. A feature diamond shaped burner unit
2. Flame height approximately 1.0 – 1.5m depending upon wind strength
3. 2.4m tall steel stand (total height when erected)
4. Base footprint approx 1m x 1m, with adjustable feet
5. Steel pins to secure the feet in soft ground (more details below)
6. Pre-made gas assembly, including 4m of piping, connections, Y-splitter and pig tail (for connecting 2 gas cylinders), regulator and a quick release fitting
7. Fixed size spanner for connecting the 2 gas cylinders to the gas assembly
8. Lighter on the end of stick x2
9. Safety notes and instructions
10. UK delivery (if remote, on an island or in NI, a surcharge may apply)
11. A donation of £36 to the Nibikure children’s charity (21cc Fireworks sponsored charity)

NOTE: You will need to source your gas for your Jubilee church tower beacon from a local LPG supplier (more details below). Remember to download a copy of the Propane Gas Safety Sheet to ensure you are aware of the risks of using LPG.

Easy Assembly

The Diamond Jubilee Beacon from 21cc Fireworks will come ready for easy assembly. It will come in sections so that it is easy to lift, easy to move and easy to transport. The gas assembly is easily connected to the burner by a quick release fitting. The gas bottles are easily connected to the gas assembly by a single threaded nut and spanner (supplied). Simple. (The gas units are pre-assembled – but it is the users responsibility to ensure all connections are tight and fit for purpose in case they have become lose in transit).

Lighting The Beacon

The Diamond Jubilee Beacon is lit using the supplied lighting tool. This is essentially a wax primed fabric on the end of a stick. When lit, it creates a steadily burning flame. This is then held over the top of the beacon as a second person slowly turns on the gas. This means that the person lighting the gas beacon is at a safe distance when the flame ignites. More details are included within the instructions. The beacon should be attended to by a minimum of 2 responsible and competent people at all times.

Trial Run

We would recommend that the Diamond Jubilee Beacon is set up as a trial run in advance of your event by those who are lighting the torch to ensure that they are familiar with the set up and operation.

Burn Time

The beacon has been designed to burn for approximately 1 hour using 2 x 13kg Propane gas cylinders, producing a flame up to 1.5m tall (depending upon wind).

Remember To Buy Your Gas

You will need to source your gas for your beacon from a local LPG supplier. Propane is supplied by most LPG stockists. If in doubt, check out the calor gas website for a local LPG supplier. Propane is supplied in the red cylinders. (Blue is Butane). Propane is supplied in 6kg, 13kg, 19kg and 47kg. Remember, when you are carrying a gas bottle, the total weight that you lift is the weight of the steel cylinder plus the weight of the gas i.e. a 13kg cylinder contains 13kg of gas, but the total weight of the cylinder is approximately 25kg.

The Right Size Of Gas Cylinder

We would recommend the 13kg or the 19kg cylinders for use with our beacon. When gas is drawn from a bottle, the liquid gas (LPG) changes to a gas by drawing heat from the air through the wall of the gas cylinder, causing the outside of the cylinder to freeze. The frost on the cylinder will cause the rate of conversion of the LPG to gas to slow down. The 13Kg are lighter to carry, but due to the rate of draw of the gas, they will freeze over more quickly, thus reducing the size of the flame as it burns. The 19Kg cylinders are larger with a greater surface area and will therefore freeze more slowly, resulting in the flame remaining larger for longer.

Stability

The unit is stable in itself. For additional stability, if setting up on soft ground, there are 4 steel pins to secure the base. If setting up on solid ground (such as a roof top or street), sand bags (not supplied) or concrete blocks (not supplied) will be required for additional stability.

You can follow the Jubilee Beacon News here. Once you have bought your beacon, you can join the nation’s celebrations and register your event using the Official Diamond Jubilee Beacons form. From there you can insert your details to have your event added to the list. This is also an excellent way of gaining publicity for your event.

21cc Fireworks had spent months planning a special show for the new year revellers. Utilising the contours and features of the castle, the show was designed to fire from 11 different firing sites around the castle grounds. The whole show was computer controlled and digitally fired for precision accuracy.

A special treat was in line for the revellers on the esplanade – as the count down commenced, on zero the sky was filled with enormous golden crossing tails and green glittering plumes, leading into an onslaught of loud sky filling bursts and zig zagging candle sequences around the castle grounds. The pre-finale was a specially designed with an innovative saltire set piece, which fired across the front of the entire castle frontage raising an enormous cheer from the jubilant crowd.

The Event Director said “Well done to 21cc Fireworks. Another truly spectacular show and a real hightlight of the evening. The Saltire raised a huge cheer. Thank you for all your hard work and preparation“.

Last night at the awards dinner, 21cc Fireworks scooped the award for ‘Specialist Wedding Services‘ 2011.

The VOWS Awards have been set up to recognise businesses who keep their promises and deliver excellent customer service. The purpose of the VOWS is to enable brides and grooms to highlight companies who they feel have exceeded their expectations and helped make their day that bit more special. This year 9,655 companies were nominated. Just 99 companies have been shortlisted. This puts 21cc Fireworks in the top 20 companies serving the wedding industry.

Company Director, Geoff Crow, said “I am overwhelmed. To be shortlisted was an incredible achievement for our business. To hear our name being announced as the winner was simply indescribable. Our whole table erupted with an enormous cheer. It was a special moment. I need to thank my team. I also need to thank our clients. It is a real privilege to be asked by brides and grooms to present our wedding products on their special day. For so many of our clients to have got in touch with the VOWS is very humbling. Thank you.“

The award ceremony was held in Glasgow on the 7th November 2011 at the Hilton Hotel, just 1 day after 21cc Firework’s busiest weekend of the year (Guy Fawkes).

Guy Fawkes 2011 was another fantastic success… with  26 vehciles and over 28 tonnes of product and equipment leaving our Edinburgh premises, this years guy fawkes was set to be a major event for 21cc Fireworks.

The team were firing all over the country from as far down south as Leicester to as far north as the Highlands of Scotland. On top of the display crew, teams of staff were working through the night at base to turn the equipment round and to restock the vehicles as they returned to site ahead of going out for the next show the following day. It was a huge exercise that had taken months in the planning.

Operations Manager Nathan said ”This really is a tremendous team effort. We work towards this peak season throughout the year and it never ceases to amaze me just how much planning, stock and equipment it takes to manage this annual Guy Fawkes event. It really is fantastic seeing it all come together. It’s a real credit to the whole team.”

This morning 21cc Fireworks received a note from one client saying “WOW!!! Last night’s display was the best we have ever seen. The fireworks display was the best I have seen outside Hong Kong. Well done.”

21cc Fireworks had designed and choreographed a number of innovative and exciting shows to various themes, including a Night With Walt Disney, which was featured on STV on Sunday 6th November. To see this show, click ‘here‘.

The sparkling 5 minute array of colour and unusual pastel shades was visible from all over, with many of the set pieces reaching to over 800 feet. Thousands of people lined the streets to catch a glimpse of the dazzling night sky display which spectacularly marked the end of the Tall Ships in Greenock.

Geoff Crow, Director of 21cc Fireworks, said: “We wanted the Tall Ships to think that Scotland put on the best event out of every port. We had put together a series of choreographed sequences and effects that were designed to ‘wow’ and capture the imagination of the audience, getting bigger and bigger as the show progressed.  There were some very large pieces in there tonight. The rain stayed off and the wind dropped before the show. The conditions were perfect.”

The performance lit up the sky, creating stunning silhouettes of the Tall Ships in the foreground of the fireworks. Councillor David Wilson added: “We are grateful to the 21cc Fireworks team for all the hard work that they have put into this event to make this show one of the largest displays and most memorable in Scotland this year”.

We had 2 months to prepare. The challenge for our team was to use the correct scale and quantity of explosive. We needed something big enough to explode the heave cake from the inside out, but not too big so as not to damage the table or spread cake too widely. We took into account the consistency of the cake and the thickness of the icing. We carried out 5 live tests to ensure we got it right. Click here to see a photo from one of our test firings.

On the special day, the wedding cake was packed with a series of small charges and the cake was placed on display for the guests to see. By using our wireless firing units, the whole package was concealed. This kept the element of surprise. As the speeches unfolded, the brother of the bride asked for the cake to taken outside, claiming it to be a ‘disaster of a cake’. He then asked for a moments silence, then on cue, we exploded it into a thousand pieces!

With the display in Scotland, we have some scottish themes running through the show, including an array of enormous Scottish thistles running the full length of the Garvel Embankment. We also a have some surprises that will put ‘smiles’ on peoples faces. This will be one of the biggest shows in Scotland this year. It is very exciting.”

The event is to be attended by an estimated 700,000 people over the course of the 4 days, with and estimated 250,000 people being there on day 3 for the fireworks finale. ‘With just over two weeks to go until The Tall Ships Races sail into Greenock, anticipation is building for what will truly be a fantastic event’.

This looks set to be a busy weekend for the 21cc Fireworks team with the T in the Park fireworks finale being fired the night before on Sunday 10th July 2011.

With months in the planning, a tank full of fuel and a supersized bag of starbursts (compulsory for long journies), the 21cc fireworks team were set for our 500 mile round trip and a 3 day wedding fireworks event.

The show was set up by mid evening. Come firing time, the sky was pitch black and the air was clear. Perfect firing conditions. As the bride and groom approached the front of the house, on cue, we fired the show. With numerous sites firing simultaneously, the sky was filled in true disney style using their wedding colours and special effects to create that dream wedding fireworks finale that Laura and Garry had hoped for.

To end the perfect weekend, we received an email saying “Hi guys, we are sorry we missed your departure from Torridon without being able to say thank you once again. The display was just magnificent and everyone was so impressed with the combinations. That was the perfect wedding fireworks finale. Thank you 21cc Fireworks.”

With all of the sound, lighting and outdoor projection systems, the set up look thoroughly professional. To add a special level of detail and to make it authentic, there were huge red drapes hung either side of the gigantic temporary cinema screen, gas flambeaux torches marking the entrance way to the park and a Hollywood style searchlight beaming high into the nights sky throughout the course of the evening.

The event started at 7.15pm with a presentation on the original Odeon cinema followed by an outdoor screening of the Bafta award winning film, Local Hero. There was toffee popcorn and fizzy juice on tap for everyone. At the end of the film, there was a spectacular fireworks display fired from the centre of the Meadows, using explosions the same size as those used at Edinburgh Castle to conclude the show. A large amount of planning went into this event. It was hailed by the Southside Community Council as a “great success” and was well attended by the general public, including local and national press.

Yesterday, the Chair of the Southside Community Council wrote to 21cc Fireworks to thank us for our services and to highly recommend us to future clients. Click here to see the formal letter.

As you know, we had a wonderful evening and it was a great success. The stewards enjoyed working with you and the insight that they had into what is involved in setting up such a display. The fact that you managed to make sure that the display was so arranged to be in perfect alignment with the building, despite the wind, was most impressive.”

We wanted to create something extra special for this event.  As an Edinburgh based company we’re particularly passionate about showing our support.  After the outdoor films have been shown in St Patrick Square, this ‘big bang’ culmination will bring the event to a memorable close.  By condensing the fireworks into a shorter time there will be a maximum impact to reflect the passion and effort that the Southside Community Council and supporters have put into saving this threatened building.

A rainbow of colours lit up the sky as thousands of people from around the world turned out to celebrate this special occasion. Company Director Geoff Crow said:

“Every so often a milestone event like this comes along and we are delighted to be a part of these celebrations. Our team have put a lot of effort into making this event a very special one to remember. Tonight has been as success, not only because of the teamwork between the different contractors, or because the event was safe, but because of the wide range of nationalities that were represented here tonight and the shear volume of families who have come to join these celebrations. People from all over the world have come to be a part of this. It’s incredible. The enormous cheer at the end of the show is what makes it all worth while.”

The pyrotechnic spectacle took over 6 months in the planning and was covered by the BBC, ITV and STV on the night. It was also represented by a number of national tabloids. At the stroke of midnight, the guests celebrated the turning of the year and were treated to a fabulous display. The sky was filled with a sequence of beautifully choreographed explosions and effects, all precision fired to the 1812 Overture music.

After the event, the client said:

“Absolutely phenomenal show. The feedback from our guests is that this was the best they had ever seen. I expected it to be good, knowing you and with the interaction we’d had, I know you do a great job, but you just blew it out the water. To celebrate New Year, 21cc Fireworks were out managing shows up and down the country for local authorities and privates parties, including a special event attended by the young Royals on the East of Scotland.

This was a particularly lovely day as not only was it a special occasion for the happy couple; Dundas Castle was delighted to be celebrating 1000^th happy couples too!  What made this event even more unusual were the pathways that had been dug through the snow so that the guests could make their way around the estate.  While many bride and grooms across Scotland had to cancel the wedding, it was important to Dundas Castle to make this wedding run as perfectly as any other, and it was equally as important for us to put on an amazing show.  We are happy to report that the couple were delighted with their display and even the 4 foot think snow couldn’t dampen their spirits.  Congratulations to the 1000^th Dundas Castle happy couple!!

With just over 3 feet of snow landing at the 21cc Fireworks Sawmill site, we have had all hands to the pump digging and clearing snow to carve a road out to the main roads. Thankfully we have a number of 4×4 vehicles, which have enabled us to continue delivering our services up and down the country through some exciting and treacherous conditions.  A huge thanks to the team for working hard to make it all happen!

21cc Fireworks were selected as an organisation that has demonstrated a proven ability to go that extra mile in not only meeting but exceeding the needs of our clients. This is an independent Award Programme that recognised both locally and nationally.

“The whole party was a great success but the fireworks finale was exceptional. I don’t think our client and his guests were expecting that. We just couldn’t believe what we were seeing. The size and the scale of the show was mind blowing and the attention to detail was incredible. I’ve never seen anything like it. The colour and effects were amazing. I was actually crying with joy! This was a very important day for these guests as they celebrated a private family event. It couldn’t have gone any better”.

The team at 21cc Fireworks have managed a number of shows for royalty and VIP’s over the last few years. Director Geoff Crow said

“Every event we do is important, but at events like these, it is especially important to ensure that every single detail is considered in the planning, the preparation and the on-site execution. Knowing that there was to be Spanish Royalty, we went to the lengths of importing a range of Spanish material to entertain the guests and to make it special for them“.

The winter section was to be a surprise to the clients as they left the party, and they truly were surprised. We had taken on the planning and logistics of bringing in and delivering 10 tonnes of snow to be dispersed over the pathway and grounds that the clients were to leave from.  Complete with flambeaux and winter flaming torches, the clients were stunned to have to make their way through the snow, past the snowman (courtesy of our own Nathan Cameron) and sledges as the sun shone brightly above. Amazing!
